Do you trust the government watchdogs around the care home industry? Whether you do or not, you have no reason to. I know what I am talking about. As a former nurse working for eight years in various homes in both England and Scotland I have learned my lesson the hard way and I can prove it: neither the Care Quality Commission and/or local services nor the Nursing and Midwifery Council have shown much of interest when it comes to investigating very detailed and serious allegations about abuse of the vulnerable. Fifteen months after my last complaint they have done next to nothing; they haven’t even asked to speak to me…. and, what is even worse, the same happened to me before in another case. Conclusion: they are just not interested. Question: so what are they there for? No matter how serious – I am actually talking about abuse causing painful death and much more of the same calibre – none of these bodies have done anything but trying to put a lid on the whole issue. Abuse in British care homes is endemic; it is very often due to mismanagement and greed, but nobody with power to do anything about it seems to care….. However, I do, and I hope you will. ”…………. In this document a complainant describes and criticizes the humiliating examinations. Part of this document has been leaked to me by a friendly source with access to such complaints. Thanks to this person I can here disclose what this insider has to tell.
  Some of these experiences are indeed remarkable: in one example it is referred to a young man who is in the process of having his genitals examined. The female doctor had, as it is described in the complaint, ‘been manipulating so much with the penis that the young man had got an erection and was standing like that with a red face right in the middle of the
room’.
  Now something quite extraordinary follows: as the examiner thereafter wanted to examine the testicles, they were gone…. disappeared! Faced with this inexplicable ‘mystery’ the woman panicked and a male doctor was called into the room to assist. Fortunately for all involved this man was then able to explain for his female colleague that when having an erection it is fully normal that the testicles disappear up into the inguinal canal. Indeed comforting news for an incompetent doctor, but it would probably be very difficult to name a more humiliating and degrading situation in which one could find oneself than the one in which this young man had been placed.
  I have heard quite a lot by now, but still, that story shocked me. It was, however, just an example. In another that is also described in this complaint a young man is laying stark naked on a couch in the examination room. He is in full view of everyone present. Again a male colleague is called upon. This time he is asked this question: ‘are the genitals here not to small?

Basic care for the elderly in their own homes in England is so bad it breaches human rights at times, an inquiry says. The home care review by the Equality and Human Rights Commission highlights cases of physical abuse, theft, neglect and disregard for privacy and dignity in home care. May I repeat: the whole system is rotten, it is about abuse and, not least it is about severe exploitation. I thought work conditions for care assistants couldn’t get worse. Recently I discovered I was wrong. I discovered that carers in the council sponsored (but privately run) home care are even worse off: An example is this man. He is paid minimum wage, but in reality his work day and earning look like this: his first client is at 8 am. He is there for 45 minutes. Then he has another visit at 11 am, one at around 3 pm and the final at 6pm back at the first client. This man is worse off than his female colleagues, as the agency only let him attend male clients. His female colleagues have work inbetween as well. But this man lives one hour busride from the area he cover. He has nowhere to go inbetween the visits, but is forced to do windowshopping. And, he is only paid (minimumwage) when he is actually with the client , not inbetween. Transport time between the clients are in the carers own time, not paid. This means that even for his better off female colleagues, they do not in any way reach minimumwage for the time they actually spend at work. Please calculate yourself on the example given and reflect upon your chances of making a living on that….. This is reality! These are the people who are blamed for neglect. It is not those who are really responsible.

24.5.2011       This is about a soldier who has left after 12 years in the German forces. In his early thirties this man tells a story about standing stark naked in front of another woman doctor again pulling back his foreskin…….  Sorry, I am completely fed up with all this. It is unbelievable how state santioned sexual abuse of people can be allowed to go on like this without anybody but a few ringing the alarm bell (that seems to be heard by nobody). What a world of sexual predators am I living in?

12.5.2011  What a shame on Germany. Utterly disgusting. For years this state protected former high profile Nazis who, like Judge Filbinger, thrived in high government positions while dishonouring and smearing the memory of around 50 000 (25 000 of them executed) deserters and war resisters http://www.larsgpetersson.com/deserters/ . If they were ever lucky enough to survive the war these people lived and died in a post war Germany that saw them all as despicable traitors. Today this state (that bears the responsibility for the two major disastrous, murderous wars in the last century, including the holocaust) has the audacity to blame and sentence the (alleged) former death camp guard Demjanjuk (91) for accessory to mass murder of 28,060 people – all this without any evidence he committed a specific crime, apart from being there. Remember, even an Israeli court once freed this man, stating he was ‘the victim of mistaken identity’.

This Ukrainian man had been conscripted into the Soviet army to fight German aggression, he had been a PoW under brutal conditions (hundreds of thousands of Soviet soldiers – privates of course, the officers were treated differently – were left to freeze or starve to death).

As the defence attorney Ulrich Busch told the court: even if Demjanjuk did become a prison guard, he did so only because as a prisoner of war he would have either been shot by the Nazis or died of starvation.

I have no comment on whether Demjanuk was a guard or not. My comment is that it is disgusting to go for a (conscripted) man like him when all but a handful of the real Nazis and collaborators were ever taken to court. After all, Hitler and his gang were even elected into office. As long as it all went ‘well’ they were in fact quite popular…

26.04.2011   Former President Carter travels to North Korea accompanied  by former Irish President and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson I read in the newspaper this morning. I admire them both, and therefore it hurts even more when Ms Robinson is quoted saying “We believe that it is very, very important to ensure that women and children and the elderly do not suffer because of a political situation”. I hope she was misquoted. However, if that was what she said then, according to her, all human beings with exeption for males age 18 – 60 ( I think that is the line a male needs to cross for again to be reconed as “innocent”) are to be protected from suffering - but these individuals, no matter their personal history, are not.

We have a picture in our front room showing Mary Robinson and my wife at an award cermony in the Dublin presidential palace – one awarding a Red Cross prize to the other for her contributions to humanity (I am sure all humans were included) in midst of a brutal war in Somalia.  I am proud of that picture. Therefore I hope: maybe Ms Robinson’s alleged comment was just a mistake, the usual misconception that all civilians are “innocent”  and men of “military age” are not – though they very often are nothing but camouflaged conscripted civilians, or just that: male. At least I hope so. There are so few people left to admire. We need those who are still there – Mary Robinson included.

‘Recognition for being the agents and pawns of a ruthless death machine that systematically butchered and tortured civilians, that rained flaming jelly gasoline and poison chemical gas on old men, women and children’ I read on top of a page of Housmans Peace Diary as I  opened the week 16 page to add a future appointment.

How often have I been upset when reading the common description of ‘innocent victims of war’ as ‘women, children and old men’.  Never any mention that those excluded from that list of ‘innocent’ people are young men (in Britain 16 and upwards) who in many cases have never had a chance to decide themselves what they wanted to fight for before they were drawn into mortal conflicts caused by precisely many of those  ’innocent’ individuals. We, many of the old ones, might not have had much to say, but in many countries we still have had a vote. Nevertheless, in case foreign aggressors attack us we are seen as innocent victims while our young sons, no matter what they have been up to in life, are legitimate targets. Interesting, isn’t it?

So who had written that above? In fact the organisation ‘Vietnam Veterans Against the War, USA’ – representing thousands of American men (average age at the time of battle: 19) who had had their whole life ruined (if they had been ‘lucky’ enough to survive) by their own democratic country’s assault on a people a world apart. These now elderly men are now indirectly saying that they themselves and their male counterparts in Vietnam should not be seen as ‘innocent’ on pair with other brutalised victims of aggressive warfare. They had been humiliated and brutalised from the beginning in a much worse way than what I describe happens to present days Germans   http://www.larsgpetersson.com/military-abuse/   and together with their Vietnamese counterparts they had lost their youth as pawns on older people’s battlefields. Still they don’t count themselves as victims. As I have seen so many times before, this is the ultimate result of military destruction of the human soul.

‘Please, dear God, help me! Please let me out! I am claustrophobic; I can’t take this any longer; don’t lock me up like this. PLEASE, somebody!! PLEASE!!!’ Yes, every night around ten the same old story started all over again. As soon as Agnes Havisham in her wheelchair was taken close to her upstairs room a fierce struggle started. Screaming and fighting back she had to be put to bed by physical force and then the bedrail went up: she was trapped. …Sure, her screams were futile. There was nobody there to help. I could hear her anguish; I detested what I was doing, but I had no choice. Or had I?

Poor old Molly, who long time ago had grown up in London’s East End, daughter of Irish immigrants, was one of these unfortunate people suffering from this outright poverty; indeed she was one of those in greatest need. Every morning, as we entered her room, she was soaking wet and soiled. It was not possible to change her during the night as we had absolutely no supplies to do so. No question, Molly Murphy’s human rights in this country did not include a dry bed to sleep in. But the indignity didn’t stop there. Wet she rested and early in the morning, from around 5 am, not only she but all the others as well were pulled out of their beds, had a wipe on the face and quickly under the arms and that was it….

Many of these carers have to struggle to make ends. They have to save wherever there is a chance; they have to travel for hours on busses, as the tube and trains are too expensive, and some have hardly ever a day off. I met Habibah on my way to work one evening. Habibah had travelled through most of London on three different buses – after having been back home hardly longer than having had time for a shower and a short nap. After work she used to get home about eleven and now she was back. This is nothing unusual: many of these low-paid care workers do the same.

This care plan writing in nursing homes indeed is a strange phenomenon. There is an enormous amount of time spent writing them, but they are read by virtually nobody. The result of this is a system that only seems to be in place to make it appear as if things are under control – all of it to satisfy the supervising bodies, nothing but that.

Every month new supplies of medication were delivered from the local pharmacy to the individual residents of the home. This was to replace not only what had been used, but also what was still there on the shelves. It meant that every month large amounts of products which only the month before had been individually delivered to the residents were returned for destruction, not because they had passed the sell-by-date, but because new supplies had arrived and everything else therefore had to be destroyed.

Still at Fig Leafs I didn’t realise how effectively the reference system keeps health workers dependent on the good will of former employers long after work contracts have come to an end. Only later I fully came to understand the subservience and humiliation we quickly can end up in – all due to this system. In reality it effectively hinders us to vote with our feet and run away from disgusting homes and abusive managers.

Not only is Kravemore one of the biggest in the business, the company most likely provides something of the worst that is to be found in the country in the area of nursing care: cramped foul-smelling shared rooms, uncared for bedsores, and shortage of most everything.

If I had a pin I would prick you with it,’ the old gaunt Baroness G. Ruud suddenly remarked as the young carer helped her on with her slippers. Because of the baroness’s challenging behaviour (throwing crockery in the care home dining area, pinching and crushing staff members’ spectacles and much more) she was far from being the favourite client to be allocated for the morning care. No this woman was indeed not behaving according to aristocratic etiquette, and, according to her now elderly sons, she had always been a hard hitter, using a box on the ears as the best argument. If you were not a specks wearer you still better watched out: she could pinch you brutally in your backside or catch your finger and try to break it. Yes, you had better be aware. For personal injuries like that (according to the company’s regulations) there was no compensation – if it forced you off work, not even sick pay.

According to native staff the general had shouted ‘bloody nigger, get him out of here!’ and ‘nurse, I don’t want that one in here; he isn’t worth polishing my shoes.’ Now the modern day valet Nelson, who – full of zest and enthusiasm – only a month before had started his career in the nursing home business, probably had had enough. Totally dejected he was gone. For his psychological well-being the situation had become untenable – now he was finished. The racism, and worse, the employer’s condoning of it, had completely worn him down. Yes, the old general was in his right to abuse him; at the end of the day he paid £110 a day to live here, and that – as later became clear to me – included the right to behave as he wished.

Quite far into my care home career I still thought the Care Commission (CQC) was on my side. I thought they would welcome somebody standing up not only for the service users in private care but also for the hard-working underpaid people looking after these vulnerable citizens. Unfortunately I was wrong. No, a person like myself wasn’t wanted. I disturbed the peace and equilibrium.

It was interesting, rather shocking, to note that the investigators had chosen to investigate the entire complaint by interviewing the two senior people accused of wrong doing, two new senior administrative staff (none of whom employed at the time of my complaint…) and only one resident, the most vulnerable of them all. No others.

After months of having asked night staff for something to eat it was reported that 104 years old E’s faeces was green and slimy. At the time I had no idea as to why. An African nurse knew better: sign of starvation. Why wasn’t this woman fed though she constantly asked for food? As it is common knowledge at the home that people often are forgotten at meal time and not fed, it seems obvious that the manager has seriously failed in her duty to oversee that in this particularly vulnerable case one of the most basic needs was being met.

Every time I came on duty this resident was extremely thirsty (apart from being a type 2 diabetic she was on Lithium). She could drink around three pints (!) of water in one go with her evening tablets. I kept documenting this and asked the manager to stress to staff that GB must be given sufficient fluid during the day. There was never a response to these requests. I was, however, surprised to read in ‘Dr’s notes’ that ‘she (GB) could no longer swallow’. The same day as I read that and that she was ‘nil per mouth’ (i.e. MUST not be offered any drinks) she again drank with me three glasses of water all in one go…. No arrangements were ever made as to how this resident should be prevented from dying of thirst. She passed away shortly after….

Mental anguish due to such humiliation is widespread in society, but nobody seems to care. Protection of young men is not a priority. It is true, economic woes (not calls for human rights) will soon end conscription. But, on a smaller scale the abuse will continue – now with ‘volunteers’ as victims.

MEDICAL RAPE presents a shocking  story that might look like fictitious sadomasochistic porno. However, it isn’t: it is a true account of state-authorised sexual abuse. Therefore, in the name of millions of defenceless young victims, the author calls for an unconditional apology for what they were exposed to by their own country. He also demands an immediate stop to further ill-treatment.
